Reprinted from The Redwood Times ~ 06/21/2011:
Master Becky Rupp, of Garberville’s Dragon Heart Tang Soo Do, recently attended a four-day master’s clinic held at the University of Northern Alabama in Florence, Alabama, which was attended by participants from 32 different countries. The event was presented by the World Tang Soo Do Association and directed by Grandmaster Jae C. Shin.
The WTSDA holds it’s master’s clinic every year in March for the purpose of enhancing its unique brand of Korean martial art and keeping it vital. The clinic is also used to keep the quality of instruction at a high level worldwide, and to maintain high standards of tradition. All candidates wishing to attain the coveted title of master, and also current masters going for higher rank, must test at this clinic before a panel of senior judges.
The majority of time at the clinic is spent training in a variety of different martial art aspects, such as: Advanced Korean Healing Exercise or “Ki Gong,” Master’s Hyungs, Knife Defense, Grappling, Group Sparring, Hapkido, Absolute Gun Defense, training with the Sword, and Judges Certification.
Tang Soo Do is a traditional martial art over 2,000 years old. Grandmaster Shin began teaching Tang Soo Do to students in the United States in 1968 and in 1982 chartered the World Tang Soo Do Association. The WTSDA is very proud of its organization and of the many accomplishments it has experienced in its last 29 years of existence -- over 150,000 members -- 32 member countries -- and over 30,000 black belts.
The organization has experienced phenomenal growth since its birth, but if one were to try to single out the most unique thing that gives it its character, World Tang Soo Do with all its diversity displays a loving unity of brotherhood and sisterhood that can be felt throughout its membership, and its contribution to humanitarian aid around the world.
On May 28, students of Dragon Heart Tang Soo Do united with the rest of the Region 1 studios in Seattle, Washington for the annual regional championship. Region One consists of Washington, Oregon, Northern California to Monterey and across to the Reno, Nevada area. There were 250 competitors at this event.
The competitors representing our community were:
Karlie Olson tested for black belt on Friday night and did a fantastic job representing her studio and community. Congratulations to our new black belt.
Master Becky Rupp was presented with her masters belt in a traditional ceremony by Grandmaster Shin. She tested in March 2010 and waited 14 months for this honor. It was a three-year process of testing in Alabama which started in 2008 with a 10,000 word thesis being turned in as well.
Dragon Heart Tang Soo Do is proud to be a member studio of the World Tang Soo Do Association since it’s beginning in 1998.
